Alcohol and Sydney North Shore and Northern Beaches

Updated: Jan 25, 2023

Australia’s Health Tracker, which compiled data from various sources, found a fifth of those living on the peninsula and northside of Sydney were risky drinkers, consuming more than two standardised drinks a day. Even in our lowest rating areas,19.9 per cent of the population drink at higher levels than the national and state averages.

Alcohol problems and Sydney North Shore and Northern Beaches

Aly Birmingham Geats, a psychotherapist based in both Northern Beaches and upper North Shore Sydney, said she suspected the rates were even higher because people don’t admit how much they really drink.

She said she saw a mix of alcohol abusers “self medicating with alcohol”, and an increasing number of high-functioning women with families and careers are just not feeling on top of life.

“I see women who are drinking a bottle of wine a day and they think it’s normal,” said Aly.

“They open a bottle to take the edge off their day while the kids are doing their homework, and by the end of the night, they’ve finished the bottle.

“Alcohol flies under the radar because it is completely normalised. But I would say it’s our biggest social issue on the northern beaches and northside of Sydney

generally.”
